About

Jo Hellier & Yas Clarke are in residence at GIFT 2025 developing a new experimental opera; Bog.
Over the course of a week, they will be visiting the peat bogs of Northumberland to gather choreography and vocal material from which to devise.

After running a workshop for 12 participants, teaching some simple vocal scores from their findings in the field, the group will share to a small audience, followed by a Q&A..

Here is a little more about Bog:

Bog is a new choreographic performance with a live vocal score. In Bog, three performers take an ecstatic, erotic journey through the hot, wet, ancient matter that makes up a peat bog.

Abstract, dark, uncanny and playful, Bog conjures a visceral and deeply pleasurable world that explores humans' sensorial enjoyment of the habitats around them, and how this can transform us into different states of being. By queering the relationship, we aim to express the capacity of humans to imagine themselves as part of a wider ecology.

Artist biographies

Jo Hellier is an artist and performer, Yas Clarke is a composer and sound artist. Together they make abstract, experimental performance work using voice and movement to examine the relationship between human and nature. From research gathered in natural habitats, they use improvisation and imagination to embody and queer the ecological relationship, creating strange musicals and experimental operas.
